If you’ve become a parent recently and worried baby’s safety issues with the car seat, let me clarify all your doubts. Often parents ask, can you use a car seat without the base? Yes, if you have any of the two belt path systems available, you can easily and safely install your infant car seat without the base.
I travel often. While on the road, I never compromise their safety. Sometimes carrying a car seat everywhere may not be possible all the time. So, you must know how to travel with a baby without a car seat. I remember when Lily was only two months, she enjoyed a drive to San Antonio in Graco SnugRide Click Connect 35 and I didn’t feel the need for the car seat base at all; FYI, it features the European Belt path system. Alternatively, you can use American seat belt locking mode if your car has the feature built-in. Don’t be confused; I will discuss both belt systems (including which one is safer) in detail in this post.

Can You Use a Car Seat Without the Base: What Are the Methods?
Although a car seat base makes the seat installation process easier (simply click on the car seat to get in and out) but it’s not always safe, especially when you’re on a bumpy road, using an Uber or a taxi, or someone else’s car.
The car seat can become wobbly when you’re on any uneven road; the car seat’s instability might be disturbing as well as risky for the baby. So, what can you do? Can you use a car seat without the base?
Yes, you can!
And you don’t need to fumble through the pages of the car seat manual for this. You can follow two ways while installing a car seat without the base- the European Belt Path, which is considered more secure, and the American Belt Path.
Note: You can use the European Belt Path system if the infant car seat features the Belt Guide at the back. The car seat belt must have a unique locking mode if you want to use American Belt Path. American Belt Path mostly works in US and Canada; since 1996, their car seat belts have featured this special seat belt locking system. If you’re not able to use any of these two methods, then you have to use a base to install your infant car seat.
In the following sections, I’ll tell you which Path is safer to install a car seat without the base and how can you use a car seat without the base. Move on!
Do You Need a Base for A Car Seat?
A car seat base allows the installation of an infant car seat inside the car. You can install the base in two ways- the seat belt fitment or the ISOFIX (a feature to attach the infant car seat more conveniently). Infant car seat base varies on the model; some bases are included with the car seats, and some are sold separately.
However, using a base to install your infant car seat is not MANDATORY. Yet, some parents prefer the base over the seat belt to install the car seat; the base makes the car seat setup more convenient. Having said that, it’s not that difficult to use an infant car seat without the base; moreover, installing an infant car seat properly with the seat belt is safer on many occasions.
Can You Use Car Seat Without the Base: Is It Safe?
All the experienced parents out there will agree that the car seat base is not a safety feature. It’s more for convenience to quickly install and release the car seat. Installing a car seat without a base is safe, although it may take a few more seconds to tighten the car seat with the seat belt properly.
In my opinion, European Belt Path is considered safer than the American Belt Path system; Unlike the American system, European Belt Path takes wrapping the car seat back along with the baby’s leg area. As a result, it appears to have a tighter and safer installation process, drops crash forces on the baby’s head and neck, and safe traveling.
How to Install Car Seat without Base
Let’s figure out the step-by-step process of how can you use a car seat without the base by following the European Belt Path system:
Step 1: Buckle Your Baby Nicely
First, recline the car seat properly; ensure it’s in a parallel position with the pavement based on the red line located at the side of the car seat. Then, pull the lap belt, tuck it into the lap belt guides over the baby’s lap, and buckle it.
Step 2: Wrap the Shoulder Belt Around the Car Seat Back
Slowly pull out the shoulder belt to the very end to put it into the locking mode. If the seat belt is not long enough, then pull the seat belt and hold it with one hand; tip the seat up with another hand. Afterward, wrap the shoulder belt across the back of the car seat. There is a designated guide at the back; thread the shoulder bet throughout that guide.
Step 3: Push the Infant Car Seat
After wrapping the belt, it’s time to push the top of your infant car seat down to make it properly secured and reclined. To ensure its proper position, you can check the red line located at the side of the car seat.
Step 4: Tighten the Car Seat
As you’ve done with the seat belt threading across the car seat, now it’s time to tighten your baby gear! What you have to do is:
- Stand behind the car seat
- Bend yourself a little
- Push the top of the seat by your body and, at the same time, pull the shoulder belt using your hands
- Wiggle the car seat from side to side while pulling the belt
Note: You can do this tightening process by kneeling or sitting beside the seat instead of standing at the back. Make sure the car seat is kept from being lifted up while doing this. And then, check the setup properly; the car seat should be able to move in less than one inch from side to side.
how can you use a car seat without the base by following the American Belt Path system:
Step 1: Buckle Your Baby’s Lap
Recline the seat and make it parallel with the pavement based on the red line at the car seat’s side. Then, thread the lap belt into the lap belt guides over the baby’s lap and buckle it.
Step 2: Engage Seat Belt’s Locking Mode
Pull the seat belt all the way out to let it get locked from the inside.
Step 3: Tightening the Seat
- Stand behind the car seat
- Bend yourself a little
- Push the top of the seat by your body and pull the shoulder belts using your hand and let it get locked from inside
- Wiggle the car seat from side to side while pulling the belt
Note: You can follow the alternative ways to tighten the car seat from the European Belt Path system

Is It Legal to Use A Car Seat Without The Base
As long as the car seat is fitted correctly and secured inside the car, there won’t be any legal issues. You must put the infant car seat buckled correctly in and secure it tightly with the seat belt. In most cases, the rules regarding car seats imply that the infant car seat must be placed in the rear-facing position; however, the law doesn’t address the mandatory use of a car seat base.
