Best Lightweight Stroller For 5 Year Old (Including 3, 4 & 6 Year Old)

By Jennifer Ward

Even though your older toddler might become a pro at walking, they can still get overwhelmed in crowded city streets or open spaces like a park. Unlike adults, those 5-year-old-feet little legs can get tired too soon! Typically, a full-sized stroller is heavy and difficult to fold, whereas lightweight strollers are, well, light and easy to fold and toss in the trunk. Whereas a lightweight stroller won’t weigh you down, at the same time, comes with a comfy, reclined seat where your kid can snooze on the go. Now, of course, there are a lot of lightweight strollers out there, and after hours of intensive research, testing, and scrutiny, I narrowed it down to the top 5 lightweight strollers that will make your life a whole lot easier and your 5-year-old or 3-, 4- or 6-years old kiddo have all the deserved comfort. Let’s get to know them.

UPPAbaby G-Luxe Stroller is all about convenience for parents and comfort for your 5-year-old toddlers. This lightweight (20 lbs.) stroller’s seat is designed with extra padding and attached with Velcro that allows easy removal. It means no more worries if your little one spills a drink or some food. The seat can hold up to 55 pounds without breaking a sweat. It also comes with a full-size canopy and a pop-out sunshade. The UPF50+ material of the canopy ensures that you and your little one can explore sunny days without worries. Your baby’s comfort is a priority, and as they grow, you can adjust the footrest accordingly.

The one-handed adjustable seat and canopy of the G-Luxe put me in control effortlessly while testing. I could shift my baby’s seating position or provide more shade with a flick of the wrist. It’s those little conveniences that make life as a parent so much easier. The extended handles provide a comfortable grip to make your strolls a delight. Folding the stroller is as easy as a breeze – just a two-step process. You’ll find two buttons near the handle; press and lift the rings to fold the stroller. Once folded, it stands on its own, and there’s even a carry strap for your shoulder. However, some users have reported that the rear wheel brakes can be a bit challenging to engage and disengage, and they’re not exactly flip-flop friendly. Overall, the UPPAbaby G-Luxe is a well-made stroller with a lot of great features. It is easy to use and folds up compactly – a good choice for parents on the go.

Graco Modes Pramettes Stroller, a creation of the esteemed brand Graco, stands out as one of the most adaptable strollers you can find. It’s tailored to cater to newborns right through to older toddlers. It comes with a weight of only 22 lbs. and boasts an impressive weight capacity. With the ability to support babies up to 50 lbs., the Pramettes Stroller ensures a comfortable ride for your 5-year-old champ. Safety is paramount too, thanks to the 3-point harness that accompanies the reversible seat. The large canopy with a peekaboo window ensures an effortless and comfortable stroll every day. When your energetic 5-year-old wants to explore more than ride, the one-hand fold mechanism comes to your rescue. No fuss, just quick folding for those on-the-go moments.

Alongside the generous storage basket, it sports a child’s tray with a cup holder, a parent cup holder, and even a phone holder, all designed to make your life easier. However, the Graco Pramette stroller misses out on an adjustable handlebar, a factor that might inconvenience parents who are particularly tall or short. While testing the maneuverability, the stroller performs beautifully on city streets and smooth paths, but it’s not an off-road champion. If you’re planning strolls through sand or gravel, this stroller might not be your best bet. Overall, the Graco Modes Pramette Stroller is a good option for parents who are looking for a versatile and easy-to-use travel system. It is especially well-suited for parents who want a stroller with a true pram mode in a stroller.

It seems to be a full-size stroller yet significantly lightweight (17 lbs.) with all the bells and whistles you need for frequent travel or day-to-day use. This premium stroller’s seat is designed to be comfortable, adjustable, and user-friendly, allowing you to recline the seat in multiple positions. Your toddler of 3 to 6 years old can sit comfortably with a reclining back support and adjustable footrest. The seat (weight capacity 50 lbs.) also features a 5-point harness and a larger sunshade with a UPF 50+ rating. The vented peekaboo window adds a playful touch and lets you keep an eye on your precious cargo. The folding and unfolding of the Minu V2 is very easy and can be done with one hand.

This umbrella stroller is built with durable narrow frames. With both front and rear spring action suspension, this beauty promises a silky-smooth ride over every kind of terrain. Talking about maneuverability, you can operate this puncture-proof four-wheeled stroller on urban streets, sideways, grass roads, or theme parks. The stroller seat is padded (weight capacity of up to 65 lbs.) for a cozy ride every time. I was impressed by how easily I could adjust the recline to near flat, allowing my little adventurer to relax in style. The adjustable calf support was a thoughtful touch, which made any longer outings much more comfortable for my kid. Safety is covered too, with a secure 5-point harness. The extended canopy takes sun protection to the next level. With UV 50+ shielding and a peekaboo window, your 5-year-old will stay shaded and chill on the go. Plus, its quick-folding mechanism ensures hassle-free transportation. A single pull is all it takes, and a convenient strap lets you fold it with one hand.

Crafted from sturdy aluminum and equipped with shock-absorbing suspension, the Joovy Zoom 360 Ultralight fearlessly takes on any terrain. After getting some good reviews, I decided to put it to the test during our family’s hiking trip. Folding this stroller was a piece of cake, a three-step affair, and it cozies up comfortably in your car trunk. For an extra pinch of compactness, wheel removal is an option. However, there’s no auto lock or self-standing feature to its name. The plush, recline-friendly seat, which supports up to 75 lbs., made sure my little boy cruised comfortably, whether sitting or leaning back for a quick nap. The wonderfully spacious canopy protected him from the sun’s rays, a blessing on those hot summer hikes.

With the lockable swivel tires and rear wheels and the air-filled tires, you can navigate this stroller (25 lbs.) effortlessly. The parent organizer has two cup holders and a snazzy zipper pocket. But, and there’s a little “but,” the storage basket has its limits – maxing out at 5 lbs. Moreover, the footrest is affixed to the seat and cannot be adjusted. Infant feet will remain hanging. As your baby grows, its legs can reach the leg rest. To sum it up, the Joovy Zoom 360 Ultralight proves to be an outstanding pick for parents who lead active lifestyles and need a lightweight stroller that can handle terrains.

Pros
  • All-terrain wheels
  • Lightweight
  • Compact fold
  • Lockable swivel wheel
  • Parents organizer
Cons
  • Non-adjustable footrest

I must talk about the folding mechanism of this stroller from my testing session. With just a couple of button presses on the handlebar, I watched the Gb Pockit+ stroller fold into a super-mini version. I had my hands full, yet I managed to fold it effortlessly. When folded, the stroller stands tall; no assistance is needed. The swivel wheels on the Gb Pockit+ make maneuvering through narrow paths a breeze. Lock ’em up for a straight-line sprint when needed. The 3Dlite Stroller by Summer Infant is an excellent choice for parents in search of a travel-friendly, convenient, and stylish stroller. Its lightweight and compact design makes it incredibly easy to carry; it weighs just 12 lbs. due to its robust yet stylish aluminum frame. While it folds down seamlessly into a compact size, it doesn’t stand on its own. The stroller provides four recline positions and a 5-point harness to ensure your 5-year-old’s comfort. The comfy seat accommodates up to 50 pounds and offers a nearly flat reclining position for naptime.

However, the canopy, while stylish, doesn’t quite extend far enough to protect my little one from that pesky low-lying sunlight. That’s where a little improvisation with a sun hat came in handy. Moreover, there’s no peek-a-boo window for added visibility. The dual front shockproof wheels handle flat surfaces with ease, although they might not perform as well on rough terrain. In summary, the 3Dlite Stroller by Summer Infant offers a compelling option for parents seeking a blend of fashion, ease of use, and portability all in one.

Pros
  • Durable and lightweight
  • Compact folding
  • Four-position reclinable seats
  • Shockproof wheels

What to Look for in the Best Lightweight Stroller for 5-Year-Old?

Your little munchkin might be all grown up; however, those tiny legs can get tired, especially when you’re out and about. Having a lightweight stroller that’s tailored to their age and needs can make your life easy on the go. Let’s have a look at the must-have features of the best lightweight stroller for 3 to 5 years old before you consider buying one:

Lightweight

Sturdy doesn’t have to mean heavy and cumbersome. Look for a stroller that strikes that sweet balance between being sturdy and still light enough for you to maneuver with ease. Toddlers often leave the stroller for a walk. It’s best if your stroller is lightweight and has a carry strap to carry it along.

What are the benefits of a lightweight stroller?

There are many benefits to using a lightweight stroller. Here are some of the most important ones:

  • Lightweight strollers are easy to fold and carry, which makes them ideal for travel or quick errands.
  • They are often small enough to fit into any car trunk, so you can bring them wherever you go.
  • Lightweight strollers are typically easier to maneuver than heavier strollers.

Weight Compatibility

The average weight of a baby 3-6 years old is between 30 to 45 lbs. Look for a stroller that has a weight capacity of around 50 lbs. The weight of the baby increases as the days pass. It’s better to buy a stroller with a higher weight capacity so that you can use it for a longer period if needed. For twin or tandem strollers, the seating capacity may vary. Check if both babies can sneak in comfortably.

What is the maximum weight capacity of a stroller?

The maximum weight capacity of a stroller varies depending on the stroller model. The standard weight limit for most strollers is around 50 lbs. However, there are also strollers with higher weight limits, up to 75 lbs.

Comfortable Seat

Babies grow faster when they are 2 to 3 years old. For your baby’s comfort, you need to see if your toddler is comfortable in the stroller seat. The seat of the best lightweight stroller for a 5-year-old should be spacious and padded to give a comfortable feeling to the baby.

What should you consider for the stroller seat?

Firstly, check whether the stroller’s seat provides ample space for your growing kid. A spacious and padded seat not only accommodates their size but also gives them a sense of comfort and freedom of movement. Make sure the seat height is high enough so that your kid can see over the edge of the seat and have a good view of their surroundings. Secondly, pay attention to the positioning of the canopy. Confirm that the canopy is thoughtfully designed and positioned so that it doesn’t come into contact with your toddler’s head. Finally, check the footrest to ensure it is long and sturdy enough for your toddler’s feet to rest comfortably.

Easy folding mechanism

Toddlers are restless, and to keep up with their energy and changing moods, you may need to fold and unfold the stroller frequently. Folding the stroller saves a lot of space when your toddler wants to sit on a chair in a restaurant or on public transport. Look for one-hand folding mechanisms or quick-folding systems that make your life simpler.

Why is a quick fold important in a stroller?

A quick-fold stroller is a must-have for parents who are always on the go. It allows you to collapse the stroller quickly and easily, even with one hand. Moreover, it saves time and effort. A quick fold stroller makes it easy to get on your way and your outings smoother. A quick-fold stroller will leave your hands free. It is especially important when you’re carrying other things, such as groceries or a diaper bag.

Final Words

Even big kids occasionally need a power nap. When you have a stroller, you’re always prepared for those unexpected siestas. Toddlers love to run and play in public spaces and have a special need for a stroller compared to infants. The right lightweight stroller isn’t just a convenience; it’s a sanity-saver and an essential tool for parents with 5-year-olds. It keeps your kid comfortable and safe and gives them the option to rest when needed. Just keep in mind that the best lightweight stroller for 5-year-old must have a higher weight capacity to support your growing kid properly.
